A childhood with uncle Roger

I have fond memories of visiting the Island and my grandparents as a child. Grandad was a pipe smoker and so was Roger for my early years. Grandad had quite a collection of pipes.

I remember Roger and Margaret having white Jack Russel Terrier dogs Tipper and Lizzy and later on also Holly I think. I remember them having puppies and visiting Granny and Grandad at Merestone at the same time as us. I remember Roger coming through the door carrying a wicker basket full of white tiny puppies making sweet little squeaks. He took them upstairs swiftly to a quiet area.

I remember Roger and Margaret's home in Flecknoe, Northamptonshire. It was a beautiful cottage with low beams and doorways. We would visit them. They had Cockatiels in a large cage in the sitting room. Over one doorframe in the dining room hung a picture of a duck I remember asking my Mum about it to be explained that most people needed to duck to avoid knocking their head on the low doorframe.

I remember Roger being very proud of his cars. I remember Lelia was driven by Roger in his Jaguar as her wedding car when she married Glenn

He was always a snappy dresser and took pride in his appearance. He kept up with fashion trends in clothes and hair. Margaret always looked perfectly turned out too on his arm.

As children we would have endless games of tug of war fun with Tipper. Uncle Roger loved his dogs.

Oh and he used to call me smiler. "Whatcha Smiler" he would say. He had time for us as children was interested in us and what we were doing. I felt like he listened.

He was so happy and excited to move to Cornwall, to enjoy a different kind of lifestyle by the sea once more.
